  2. iPhone 5 Review

Key specifications and comparison of the iPhone 5 and 4S

Are you looking to buy the iPhone 5 and keen to see what features have improved from its predecessor, the iPhone 4S? Find some of the major changes below.

Dimensions – the iPhone 5 weighs in at 112 grams, which incredibly is lighter than the iPhone 4S even though the 5 is bigger. It sits at 123.8 x 58.6 x 7.6mm, with only the height of the phone increasing in size. Even the thickness of the iPhone 5 has reduced from its predecessor, which is an amazing feat considering its functionality improvements.

    Chip – the iPhone 5 offers Apple’s A6 chip, a step-up from the A5 chip in the 4S.

Display – the display stretches 4 inches diagonally, 0.5 inches longer than the iPhone 4S. The resolution on the 5 is also improved, offering 1136 x 640 compared with the 4S’s 960 x 640.

Connectivity – one of the biggest changes for the iPhone 5 is its new connector. The new 8-pin connector, nicknamed Lightning, is distinctly smaller than the old 30-pin connector and closely resembles a microUSB input. The Lightning connector doesn’t match up exactly with a microUSB input, continuing Apple’s habit of reinventing the wheel when it comes to accessories.

  3. Samsung Galaxy S3 Review

    Key specifications and features spotlight

Processor – the Samsung Galaxy S3 runs a quad-core processor called the Exynos 4 Quad, which operates at 1.4GHz. To put this in perspective, the Samsung Galaxy S2 ran a similar processor rated at 1GHz and was hailed as breakthrough when it was launched in 2011. To step it up again shows Samsung’s commitment to fast and efficient software.

Screen – the Samsung Galaxy S3 boasts a HD 1,280 x 720 screen, which is half an inch bigger than the S2. It is a display that has set a new, very lofty benchmark in the mobile phone industry.

Dimensions – the S3 is slightly larger than its predecessor, but its neat design means you really don’t notice much of a change. The dimensions sit at 136.6 x 70.6 x 8.6mm, with light plastics ensuring it tips the scales at just 133g. Overall, it’s a very light feeling phone, especially for its size.

Battery – to cope with upgrades to processors and displays, a larger battery was needed. This contributes to the larger dimensions on the S3. The battery is removable, which is a great feature should you be having troubles down the track.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 also features the very latest Android operating system and a very suave looking camera. All ‘hub’ apps featured on the S2 are carried over to the S3 as well.

Key differences in features and specifications – quick wrap

    Samsung Galaxy S3

The look and feel of the iPhone 5 compared to the Samsung Galaxy S3 are distinctly different. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has a much larger screen, giving it a slightly miniature tablet feel. The screen size of the iPhone 5, whilst bigger than the iPhone 4S, is still a lot smaller than the S3. The iPhone 5 is also marginally thinner.

Battery life on the Samsung Galaxy S3 is definitely superior to the iPhone 5. Figures say that the S3’s battery tops any rival by at least 20%. It is a poor showing from Apple in the battery stakes, with the 5’s battery only slightly better than what was offered with the 4S.

One of the biggest changes on the iPhone 5 is its move away from the 30 pin connecter towards a smaller 8 pin connecter. It is similar in style to a microUSB, which the Galaxy S3 adopts, but isn’t exactly the same. Any hardware that utilise the old 30 pin connecter have now been made redundant.

The cameras are very similar between the two models and the battle for superior operating software still sees Apple come out on top, but Samsung is closing quickly.
