The Oppo R9s arrived in Australia last week, promising a premium design, excellent camera, and snappy performance for only a fraction of the price other manufacturers charge. But does it live up to its hype? Here are the key features of the R9s.

Oppo R9s

Body & Screen

Design-wise, the Oppo R9s features an all-metal body, giving it a stylish look as well as protection. It is also thin and lightweight, only 6.58mm thick and 147 grams.

The Oppo R9s has a 1920 x 1080 pixel Full-HD AMOLED screen, to offer sharp and bright viewing. It is also covered in Gorilla Glass 5, with the latest scratch-resistant features, to add that extra bit of protection.

Oppo have further improved its fingerprint reader to be incredibly fast and the best in the market– now you just lay your finger on it, and before a blink of an eye it is unlocked. Many users have noted that it is faster than an iPhone.

Processor, Memory, and Performance

The Oppo R9s has a Snapdragon 625 chipset to offer snappy performance. Unless you will be using it to play high-end games, the Oppo R9s will handle all tasks with no lag at all. There is 4GB of RAM to allow you to easily multitask, surpassing the 2-3GB found in most mid-range phones. The R9s comes with 64GB of on-board storage, which will be more than enough for most users. If you need more storage though – a microSD of up to 256GB can be inserted into the second SIM slot.

The R9S now has a “six-string” antenna design on the back to improve 4G and Wi-Fi signals. It also looks better - the ultra-thin 0.3mm lines blends into back and adds to the stylish design.

Oppo R9s

Camera

Oppo has historically known for making great cameras. With the R9s, Oppo has yet again improved camera features to meet demands for higher quality images. Packing 16 Megapixel cameras on both the back and front, it is perfect for selfie lovers seeking the highest possible resolution. With a f/2.0 aperture on the front and f/1.7 aperture on the rear, the R9s is still able to produce decent phones even in poor light when combined with Oppo’s Screen Flash technology. The rear camera also includes dual phase detection autofocus, to improve focus speeds to allow you to quickly capture important moments. The Oppo R9s is able to shoot in 4K video, and recorded sound is clear.

Dual Sim

As mentioned in our previous post, Telstra has shut down its 2G network, rendering many Dual SIM phones effectively as single SIM. Oppo have recognised this, and as a result the R9s offers 4G+3G Dual SIM, allowing both slots to still connect to Telstra. Optus and Vodafone are also closing down their 2G networks later this year, so the Oppo R9s will be one of the only few Dual SIM phones available soon.

Battery

The Oppo R9s packs a 3010mAh battery, an extremely large capacity for a phone this thin. As a result, the R9s will easily last a full day under moderate to high use. The R9s now offers VOOC fast charging – it will only take you a few minutes of charging to get an extra few hours of battery life. Charging the phone from 0% to 100% will only take about one and a half hours, so there is no need for overnight charging.

Conclusion

Oppo has once again delivered a phone that really shines when compared to other midrange phones. It offers a stylish design similar to the iPhone, a camera that is better than many flagships, and decent performance  at an extremely budget friendly price. Also featuring a snappy fingerprint scanner, VOOC fast charging, 4GB of RAM, and Dual SIM, users who are looking for value in their phone should look no further than the Oppo R9S.
