The new Huawei Mate 9 has finally arrived. With a 5.9 inch screen, it promises to be the best big-screened phone in the market right now. How does it fare in other features? We have a look at all the features of Huawei’s latest flagship.

Body & Screen

On first glance, the Mate 9 looks very similar to last year’s Mate 8. However Huawei has improved the narrow vertical bezels and its slim profile, allowing it to be easier to hold than other large screen devices. Many reviews noted that holding the Mate 9 was more comfortable than their iPhone 7 Plus or Nexus 6P, which is impressive given that the Mate 9 has a larger screen.

There’s a fingerprint scanner at the back, which is extremely fast and accurate like most Huawei phones. You can also use the fingerprint scanner for gestures, allowing you to tap once to go back, press and hold to return to the home screen, or swipe down to open your notifications.

The mate 9 looks fantastic, with a metal body. Despite its 1080p resolution, the Mate 9 screen looks very bright and detailed, with excellent viewing angles.

Processor, Memory, and Performance

Being a newly released flagship, the Mate 9 has the latest Kirin 960 processor with the new Cortex-A73 cores, and the new ARM Mali-G71 GPU to offer extremely fast performance, matching the best out there.

Mate 9 also features a Machine Learning Algorithm, which learns about your habits and prioritises the performance of apps and features you use more often to make sure that there’s always the right resources available. As a result, Huawei claims that your phone will remain fast, even after months of usage.

Huawei has included 64GB of onboard storage, so you will be able to store plenty of apps and media. This is also backed up by the 4GB of RAM, allowing you to run many processes and apps simultaneously.

Cameras

Huawei P9’s dual lens Leica camera was a huge success, so Huawei has also included it in the Mate 9. There is a 12MP colour sensor and a 20MP black and white sensor, which when combined process an extremely detailed and clear image. The camera also features Optical Image Stabilisation to make sure that your image is focused.

The Mate 9 has a 8MP front camera, ensuring that your selfies come out bright and clear. There’s also beauty mode as usual to remove all blemishes on the skin, making you look younger.

Video recording on the Mate 9 is excellent, offering up the 4K recordings.

Battery

Huawei are not historically known for making phones with the longest battery life, but it looks like that has been resolved. Packing a massive 4000mAh battery to power its 5.9” Full-HD screen and fast processor, Huawei claims that regular users will get two days of battery life, and power users will get one day. Tests and reviews so far are extremely promising, with the Mate 9 ranking among the highest for battery life in flagships. Even many heavy users are reporting that they are able to get two days out of a single charge.

The Mate 9 also offers Fast Charging, to allow you to quickly recharge on the go. Huawei also claims that the fast charger will monitor the temperature of the phone, and slow charging down if it's overheating.

Conclusion

The Huawei Mate 9 has ticked all the boxes for a new high-end flagship, with a great design, fast processor, plenty of memory, a detailed camera and long battery life. If you are looking for a Samsung Galaxy Note 7 replacement, the Mate 9’s large screen makes it the best phablet that you can buy now.
